Earthquakes Rock Myanmar and Thailand

TCWriter – March 28, 2025

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake centered in Myanmar sent shockwaves throughout Southeast Asia on Friday, leaving widespread devastation and triggering urgent rescue efforts. In Myanmar, a mosque in Taungoo partially collapsed—claiming at least three lives—and a hotel in Aung Ban collapsed, resulting in two deaths and 20 injuries. In Bangkok, Thailand, a 30-story high-rise under construction crumbled, trapping 81 people in its rubble; local officials report three fatalities at the site.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck at lunchtime with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock just 12 minutes later. The epicentre was near Sagaing, close to Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Earlier tremors in Taiwan and Tibet underscore that nature’s might is on full display.

What Happened

The initial tremor rattled central Myanmar, triggering panic and significant structural damage amid ongoing civil strife. Local media report damage across multiple cities, complicating rescue efforts. In Bangkok, authorities declared a disaster area; rescue teams are combing through debris while police evacuate residents from unsafe buildings.

A Call for Humanitarian Assistance

Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in six regions as international relief agencies and local rescuers battle disrupted communications and damaged infrastructure. In Bangkok, emergency services have deployed drones and search dogs to aid rescue efforts, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian support.

Biblical Reflections and Prophetic Warnings

For many in the Church of God, these seismic events carry prophetic significance. Scripture reminds us that earthquakes are a sign of the end times. In Mark 13:8, Jesus warned, “And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.”

Similarly, Luke 21:33–37 exhorts believers to “watch and pray,” as no one knows the hour of Jesus’s return. Earthquakes and volcanoes are prophetic signs to watch and look out for.

The Bible makes it clear that significant earthquakes are certain to occur in the future (Revelation 22:6). These events will impact everyone, regardless of where they live. In fact, without God’s intervention, humanity would not survive the coming end-time tribulations. As Jesus warned:

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.” (Matthew 24:21-22)

Jesus also gave a clear instruction on how we should respond:

“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36)

Now is the time to watch, pray, and prepare—spiritually and practically—so that you may be counted worthy to escape what is to come and stand before Christ. Natural disasters strike suddenly, changing the world around us in an instant. Stay vigilant, seek God, and be ready.
